We invite candidates from all areas of Maths, Statistics, Astrophysics, Cosmology and Computer Science to apply for this position in the Astrophysics Research Centre (ARC), which is based within the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science. Astronomy is a strategic focus area at UKZN as the University seeks to position itself as an international centre of research in this field. ARC offers a vibrant educational and research environment in Astronomy and has many well established national and international collaborative research links.
The successful candidate will assist the ARC-KREATE Computational Data Scientist in the development of new algorithms to analyse astronomy big data, in collaboration with university academics and researchers, and apply these techniques to industry problems. Alongside the Computational Data Scientist, the Senior Data Science Technician will develop and present training materials for students and industry personnel in skills development workshops.
The Senior Data Science Technician must have knowledge of working with big data and Machine Learning. The incumbent is also required to use their excellent communication skills using Ms Word, Excel, PowerPoint, to liaise with colleagues and external partners in writing reports. The incumbent will also need to have web development skills. Funding for this position is provided through the KREATE NPC. This position is strictly full-time and limited to one year due to the nature of the funding source.
Minimum Requirements
- 3-Year BSc degree with programming or computer science courses or machine learning research experience
- 2-Years experience (1 year practical experience plus 1 year experience from a degree doing programming language and python)
- University courses in software engineering related or data science related subjects.
